LAUGHING HYENAS
Merry Go Round (2lp, Reissue) (bonus Tracks, Remastered)
 cover
Third Man
At long last, the good folks at Third Man have reissued one of the most overdue reissues from one of the greatest bands of the '80s/'90s: THE LAUGHING HYENAS. Their twisted post-hardcore blues-worship manifested itself into a post-BIRTHDAY PARTY, post-CRAMPS nightmare that frightened and entranced everyone who came into contact with them. Enter post-NEGATIVE APPROACH JOHN BRANNON, reshaping his intensity into something new, led by the searing, twisting and poetic guitar playing of LARISSA STRICKLAND and the pummelling rhythm section of her 'brother', bass player KEVIN STRICKLAND and maniac drummer JIM KIMBALL. They appeared to come from some 'other' place, their own world. KEVIN looked like some kind of preacher out of a Flannery O'Connor novel, JOHN looked like he'd snap your neck without a second thought and LARISSA seemed to come from another time, another world...like maybe she'd tell your fortune as part of some gypsy caravan from the 1940s. This expanded reissue of their unsettling debut 'Merry Go Round' adds a whole LP worth of rarities. Trying to explain this to 'the kids' just doesn't do it justice. Dive in and experience the LAUGHING HYENAS anew. If you're down with THE SCIENTISTS, GUN CLUB, THE CRAMPS, THE BIRTHDAY PARTY then you NEED THIS! E-S-S-E-N-T-I-A-L ! ! ! !
Available at: Broadway

 cover
Lion Productions
Late 90's electronic music from Mark Rudolph, a musician based out of Milwaukee. Released alongside of some of Rudolph's late 70's & early 80's music under the name DASZU, this material was created for Rudolph's interactive 3D art performances. These loop-based recordings definitely have a production music quality to them & sounds of late 90's & early 00's dance, trip-hop & ambient music are all over this.

PORTAL
Ion
 cover
Profound Lore
Fifth album of complete death metal head-fuckery from Australia's PORTAL. Calling "Ion" "straightforward" is a disservice to PORTAL, because even at their most streamlined, PORTAL is a bizarre class unto them- selves. One of the only, truly unique metal bands going today!

PLEASE
1968/ 69 (reissue) Please 1968/ 69
 cover
Acme/ Lion
We wouldn't be surprised to learn that you've never heard of the U.K. musician Peter Dunton. You've likely heard of his band T2, a somewhat obscure progressive rock band that released a legendary album in the genre "It'll All Work Out in Boomland" on London Records in 1970. He was also in the great NEON PEARL & this pre-T2 band called PLEASE. Minor key, organ-driven progressive psychedelia with hints of Syd Barrett era PINK FLOYD, a darker take on BEATLES tunes like "Blue Jay Way" or "Lucy in the Sky..."Fans of T2 will recognize the link right away. RECOMMENDED.

ATLAS MOTH
Coma Noir (clear W/ Black Splatter)
 cover
Prosthetic
2018 album from Chicago's THE ATLAS MOTH is less "post" and more "metal" from a band that's known for their melodic-but-heavy take. This is their first with BROKEN HOPE drummer MIKE MICZEK, who helps keep THE MOTH right in the pocket. A dense, rewarding listen.
Available at: Broadway and Milwaukee Ave.
New LP $22.99

TRIBULATION
Down Below (silver Vinyl, 180g)
 cover
Century Media
The Swedish band TRIBULATION got their start as purveyors of the classic Swedish death metal sound ala ENTOMBED & made two albums in that style. With their 2015 album "Children of the Night" (a Reckless fave that year), the band almost totally switched gears & moved into a more gothic, almost "death rock" zone. With a new drummer behind the kit the band continues in that direction with even more of a mainstream hard rock sound. The vocals still have that black/death metal rasp so they haven't totally lost the grit but this is definitely some slick shit, with plenty of melodic & triumphant guitar solos & some mellow interludes that owe as much to 80's horror movie themes as they do classical music. So if you can imagine a mix of something like later NACHTMYSTIUM & CHRISTIAN DEATH, you'll have a good idea what "Down Below" is all about. RECOMMENDED!

ENDO, KENJI
Niyago (imp, Reissue)
 cover
Pony Canyon
HEADS UP JAPONOPHILES! The Pony Canyon label has a brilliant reissue series going of highly sought after Japanese records from the 60s & 70s. This 1970 album was the debut by Kenji Endo with a band featuring players that would go on to form the great band HAPPY END. Endo's love of cats was supposedly no joke so the appearance of one on the cover isn't random. The music is a mix of groovy, psych rock with folky elements & hints of blues. Endo was supposedly heavily influenced by Dylan & Jimi Hendrix & you can hear that but he definitely has his own sound. Another amazing sounding reissue on the Pony Canyon label.

COSMOS, PATRICK
Tonal Rotors (white Case, 1st Press)

REPOS
Hearts & Heads Explode (reissue)
 cover
Youth Attack
2017 reissue/remaster of the second REPOS album (first released in 2006)!! This has been OOP for too long. With a total runtime of like 12 minutes, this LP saw the band with a looser feel; even more raging than before. A classic Midwest band/album. RECOMMENDED.

New LP $22.99

REPOS
Repos (reissue)
 cover
Youth Attack
2017 repress of the first two legendary REPOS albums! Ex-members of CHARLES BRONSON & DAS OATH blew a lot of people's minds when this was released in 2004 with their then-unusual, more-straightforward YOUTH OF TODAY, CRO-MAGS style of hardcore in a scene that was then full of thrash-revival bands. Remastered so this is even more hard-hitting the second time around.
