Cursebreaker X (ltd. 500)
 cover
100% Electronica
Chicagoan Kevin Hein (and Reckless alum) returns as EQUIP. Kevin is obsessed with video games & music & he was one of the first people we knew on the vaporwave tip. He's spent the past few years perfecting his craft, touring in Japan, providing scores for video games & you guessed it, even more gaming. 90s & 00s game soundtracks are a major influence for sure, but Hein throws in his love of bands like COCTEAU TWINS with guitars drenched in shimmering stereo chorus which gives him an edge on others mining similar territory in our opinion. Kevin has really carved out a unique path for himself & we're stoked to see where he goes next. RECOMMENDED!

GIBBS, FREDDIE & MADLIB
Bandana
 cover
RCA
One of the biggest smashes of the summer, FREDDIE GIBBS and MADLIB (aka MADGIBBS) reunite to follow up their 2014 'Pinata' collaboration. The album is an end-to-end banger, with plenty of twists and turns, hi-gloss production, earworms and inimitable raps. A modern-day classic, very highly recommended.

BEIRUT
Flying Club Cup (reissue, White Cover)
 cover
Pompeii
Beirut's debut album "Gulag Orkestar" was one of those rare debuts that truly blew away most people that heard it especially when they found out that leader Zach Condon was still a teenager. The follow up e.p. "Lon Gisland" was the first to feature the full BEIRUT band & "Flying Club Cup" is the first full length to do so. The Balkan styles that were so prevelant on the debut are more subdued this time around. Many of the songs feature simple percussion arrangements, accordion & sparse horn arrangements giving the album sort of a 'Parisian street musician' sort of vibe. Condon's voice sounds more mature this time around, almost like a tenor Stephen Merritt or Rufus Wainwright. So those of you that were betting on a sophomore slump for BEIRUT well, it's time to pay up.

Ba Da Bing
Emily Cross returns with her third album as CROSS RECORD. Dreamy & introspective experimental pop songs that remind us a lot of LOW, specifically their "Double Negative" album. Those of you that appreciate inward-looking records will appreciate this a lot.

RUSSIAN CIRCLES
Blood Year (ltd. Gold Vinyl)
 cover
Sargent House
The seventh album from Chicago's own RUSSIAN CIRCLES is a relentless, invigorating collection of heavy post-rock, retaining the outfit's driving rhythmic character while exploring the more melodic elements brought out by hooks and arrangements. There's a push and pull between relying on the repetition of a strong riff vs. branching out to the edges of the idea, and they navigate this conflict perfectly; all of these songs are purposeful in their construction, allowing for empowering crescendos that justifiably remind us of "Romantic"-era composers. HIGHLY RECOMMENDED!!!

INJURY RESERVE
Injury Reserve
 cover
Loma Vista
From experimental bangers to straight up classic boom bap, Injury Reserves debut has an energy about it. The feeling of a fight about to break out, the quiet menace of violence & the party that arises out of it. Injury reserve is smart, hardcore rapping, over killer beats.

DEY, KATIE
Solipsisters
 cover
Run For Cover
Melbourne's bedroom pop queen KATIE DEY returns with her third album 'solipsisters', and it's a stunner. the psychy production and pitch-shifted vocals of her previous work is still present, but there's a clarity here that DEY hasn't allowed herself previously. Feelings of isolation and discomfort in one's own body are the subjects here, and the songs themselves are gorgeous, the melodies sharp and the production simultaneously lo-fi and lush. For fans of (SANDY) ALEX G, KATE BUSH, BJORK, and anything on the Orchid Tapes label. RECOMMENDED.

SOFIA BOLT
Waves
 cover
Loantaka
SOFIA BOLT is the project of the French musician Amlie Rousseaux who is currently based in Los Angeles. Crisp & clean guitars with just the right amount of chorus & 'verb that sounds like a darker take on a surf vibe. Featuring Angel Olsen bassist & Reckless alum Emily Elhaj on guitar & a production cameo from Cali music legend Van Dyke Parks, Rousseaux has created a fantastic collection of tunes that hint at everything from THE FEELIES to CHASTITY BELT & THROWING MUSES. RECOMMENDED!

NIVHEK
After Its Own Death (2lp) Walking In A Spiral Towards The House
 cover
Superior Viaduct
NIVHEK is another project for Liz Harris aka GROUPER. This lengthy pieces were composed as a collaboration with the visual artist Marcel Weber. This is more experimental than her GROUPER work with stretched-out compositions of bells that sound like slowed-down gamelan pieces, sound collages of layered vocals & field recordings. Listening to this is a rather heady experience & works best hearing in one listen. RECOMMENDED.

KIM
Kim
 cover
Love Lion
Chicagoans that were around in the 2010s or so might remember a band from the DIY scene called GEFFIKA. They were a sludgey noise-rock band fronted by former Reckless alum & now Oakland based Jessica Calvanico. KIM is a logical extension of that sound with heavy riffs & a no-wave leanings ala Lydia Lunch/early SONIC YOUTH. RECOMMENDED!

KHRUANGBIN
Hasta El Cielo (yellow Vinyl) (w/ 7")

Dead Oceans
"Con Todo El Mundo" is one of our favorite records of the past few years at the shops so we're more than down for these dub versions of the tracks. The songs were remixed by the legendary dub producer Scientist & KHRUANGBIN's songs lend themselves perfectly to the remixes.

LOCKS, DAMON & BLACK MONUMENT ENSEMBLE
Where Future Unfolds
 cover
International Anthem
Chicago's improvisational jazz scene has flourished in the last few years - in large part due to its advocacy on Int'l Anthem, a Chicago-based label responsible for carrying the scene's prominent releases and giving them a wider exposure outside of the city. As improvisation, performance is perhaps THE central element to this music. Artists such as MAKAYA McCRAVEN, JAIMIE BRANCH, and IRREVERSIBLE ENTANGLEMENTS rely on the energy of the stage and the symbiotic relationship between the performer and audience to create their albums. This has never more clear than here, on DAMON LOCKS' project "Where Future Unfolds". Starting as a sound collage with Civil Rights Era speeches and a drum machine, it has expanded to include the BLACK MONUMENT ENSEMBLE of musicians, choir singers and dancers, all in expression of the struggle for racial and class empowerment, all unified by time. Recorded at Garfield Park Conservatory during their debut performance, "Where Future Unfolds" is soul-jazz theater. It's dizzying, free and yet tied seamlessly together by its central theme. CANNOT BE MORE RECOMMENDED!!!

BLACK MIDI
Schlagenheim
 cover
Rough Trade
BLACK MIDI's 'Schlagenheim' is chaotic, spazzy and thought-provoking in a way that sounds like HENRY COW-meets-MELT BANANA-meets-THIS HEAT. These young lads have managed to create a charismatic album that makes one wonder what makes them tick. May appeal to fans of mid-to-late '90s noise rock. EXCELLENT!

Cursebreaker Zero Act 1 Cemetery Moonglow
 cover
100% Electronica
Never one to do the same thing twice, Equip ushers in a new era of original vaporwave. After I Dreamed of a Palace In The Sky's gauzy new age and last years tribute to 16 bit RPGS OSTs, Synthetic Core 88, comes a new adventure, "CURSEBREAKER X". CURSEBREAKER ZERO is a series of three singles leading up to the album, featuring self-sampling eccojams as vinyl exclusive b-sides. The first "CEMETARY MOONGLOW (in the cold air of the night)" mixes the gothic synthpop stylings of 80's 4AD with the atmosphere of a Castlevania game. Catchy SNES-era leads weave between waves of dreamy chorused out guitar wash amongst a slushy backbeat.
